It delivers. Infinos Gaiden is a continuation of the dev’s “Infinos” series of shooters, horizontal scrollers that were previously offered as freeware and on other venues such as Playism. As with all of the dev’s shump games, the focus is more on emulating the late 80’s-early/mid 90’s style traditional shooter instead of the manic style shooter more common today. That means looser, less numerous bullet patters, environmental hazards, and a focus centered around weapon gimmicks, over being showered with bullet curtains and figuring out the nuances of elaborate scoring systems to best take advantage of them. The gameplay is relativity straightforward with a frugal weapon system similar to that of “R-Type”, but with it’s own unique twist. It may seem unremarkable at an initial glance, but the simplicity works well for this game, because it is intuitive and makes the game very easy to pick up and play. It starts off relatively slow to draw you in, and gradually progresses in difficulty over the course of the game. Still, even someone with pretty average shmup skills would probably have a reasonable chance getting a no continue clear on the default difficulty at least in a short time frame with a little practice, making it less intimidating for the beginner or someone more casual. Assisting this is the addition of a challenge mode, where you can practice stages as you unlock them, and then unlock some additional things to extend the game even further. Ascetically, compared to the previous “Infinos” games, there is a noticeable jump in quality. It’s hard not the notice the attention the detail and the craftsmanship that was put into making this game, as shown in the sprites and the stage progression. The dev seems to be improving and refining with each new project. There is a particularly awesome moment in stage 6, where you start off on the planet surface, and suddenly you’re ascending rapidly into the sky, taking out enemy waves and sinking battleships on the way. You burst through the planet’s outer atmosphere and the action packed BGM dims to a faint sound as you catapult into space then gradually reverts back to a normal (but slightly lower) volume as you reorient yourself and finish the stage. All of this was done with 2D pixel graphics. Moments like that show what a labor of love this game is and make you appreciate that games like this are still being made. For the soundtrack, Hyakutaro Tsukumo returns from “Battle Crust” for another round composing. Where as “Battle Crust” was done in full lo-fi FM synth to match the style of the game, Infinos Gaiden is interesting as it mixes some 16-bit like FM chiptune flair with the distinct PS1/Saturn era style synth Tsukumo is well known for from his Technosoft days and beyond. This isn't a bad thing at all, as no one else makes melodramatic synth-rock sound appealing quite like Tsukumo does. I think the soundtrack most closely resembles his work on “Blast Wind”, since they both feature upbeat, energetic rock style tracks coupled with melancholy "crying" music to fit the more somber elements of the games. Overall it is unsurprisingly excellent. It’s a bare bones release and that may irk those who are looking for things like achievements and such, but the core gameplay is solid and well worth the asking price. This game is especially a love letter to the old school shooter fan. The type of person who perks up when they hear words like "R-Type", "Darius", "Gradius", "Zanac", "Aleste" etc. I count myself among those people, and if that applies to you, than Ininos Gaiden is a required purchase.. Do you like fun? Then you now know the answer to the question "should I buy this game?"If you ever enjoyed shooting games in the late 80s or early 90s on either console or in the arcade, this game has got your back. And if you&re still not convinced, grab the demo!. This is a great 90s style shmup with excellent pixel art. Although I was never a fan of the music in a lot of Japanese shooters of that era, the music here fits that style. It feels like an arcade port for a game that you missed 25 years ago. Also, lots of nice touches. I was impressed when I was flying low over water and kicking up mist, and when the high-speed tanks appeared on the desert level (I think level 3).For anyone considering putting it in an arcade cabinet and/or on a 4:3 CRT... it works nicely.. The nostalgia is strong with Infinos Gaiden. Most areas remind me of open air Gradius (Ship remind anyone of Lord British?). A chunk of gameplay is reminiscent of the methodical, tight caving fly-throughs of R-Type--Especially Leo.The cinematic stylings remind me of Rayforce.Music is all Hyakutaro Tsukumo's delicious Thunder Force-ish leitmotifs. But it brings it's own challenging, and simple power-up system to bear--effective if you know when to use certain weapons. (The game clues you in to when to use them, if you pay attention.)My only complaint would be a certain blue bullet type visibility in sandstorms, but that's the point of the area. It's not an easy game by any means. Barrier drops are rare. And it isn't even a bullet-hell.All of it adds up to one damn fine shmup. Now I'm gonna have to go back and play the earlier games in the series. I feel terrible for not having played them earlier.. Straight out of a vault from 1995 we are presented with the best SHMUP on Steam. Why the best? Two reasons: 1. IG is simple yet wonderful in both gameplay and scoring. I don't have to be a mathematician to figure out the scoring and patterns. I shoot stuff and I get points. Simple.2. It's atmospheric both visually and audibly. The production values and level design are directly from what you'd expect to see from a major japanese developer in the mid ninetees . It harkens back to a simpler time of sprites, crt monitors, and amazing retro soundtracks. If this game was somehow released on arcade/consoles back in the day I guarantee it would of made some developer famous. Alas, here we are almost 25 years later and a game like IG will probably see only a handful of sales. Sad how things change but I am glad this game saw the light of day.Infinos Gaiden is almost perfect. 9/10. If the dev could implement some sort of online leaderboards it would be a 10/10.Please devs, for your next Steam shmup release lets see an online leaderboard :). The best 90's arcade shooter since arcade's in the 90'sIf you are even remotely interested in shoot-em-ups just go and buy it. If like me you love and crave shoot-em-ups go and buy it, something special awaits you. The attention to detail to the design aesthetic is astounding. It looks, feels and sounds just like something that would of launched on the MVS or put out by Taito in the early 90's. The programmer has even included slight graphical stutters on the overlapped parallax scrolling to mimic hardware of the era. I love this game. one small suggestion to make it perfect is that it need s a CRT/scanline filter. it has a smoothing option but no scanline which i thought was a little odd, and maybe to create the whole arcade feature it could of had an enter credits function. Minors, very minor gripes aside i give this a 9/10. Add the scanlines and i'd make it a perfect score. Its fast, fluid, fun and engaging. Everything a good shooter ought to be.. Fantastic game with a fantastic soundtrack.
